Conversations with Hilary: Designer Ken Fulk

San Francisco Designer Ken Fulk

What do you believe to be your greatest accomplishment?

My 21-year relationship with my husband, Kurt.

Do you have a prized possession? What?

I would say my most prized possession

is our brood of golden retrievers. We’ve had many – currently Delilah and Hubbell are the beasts that rule our lives.

What do you love about yourself?

I’m loyal.

What do you think others love about you?

I’m loyal.

If you could be anything other than what you currently

are, what would it be?

A singer. I sing constantly. Often giving full fledged concerts in the car when I’m driving alone.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

I go down to the kitchen, turn Morning Edition on the radio, make coffee and check e-mail. Then I try to go to the gym.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a Friday night?

Zuni. Standing at the bar. A margarita and a dozen oysters.

What do you like most about what you do for a living/career?

I won the lotto when it comes to careers. As I’m known to say…God made a job for me. I get to help create memories and beauty for people I care deeply about.

What were you passionate about when you were an 8 year old?

I’ve always been consumed by how people live, from the simplest things like setting a table, to rearranging a living room (often a surprise for my parents). I was also obsessed with travel, I wanted to go anywhere and everywhere – all the time.

What are you passionate about now?

The same things I was passionate about when I was eight!

What’s your favorite season? Why?

I love winter in Napa Valley. It’s when I first found our ranch up there. Everything is green. Thegiant oaks are black against the sky. The air smells of wet earth and smoke. It’s such a dramatic contrast to the hot, dry California summers.

If you were a cocktail or drink (this could apply to a lot of things) what would it be?

Margarita. Up. No salt.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you want to have with you?

Assuming I’m alone…A trunk full of books, an endless bottle of tequila, a big straw hat.

If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?

Nap.

What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?

“Do You Want To Dance?”

If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Thomas Jefferson.

If your life was made into a movie, what would it be called?

“Lucky Lad”

Do you have any regrets?

Not yet, but I’m working on it. ;-‐)

Define Freedom.

Being able to wake up every day and do something you love.

What are your personal core values?

Be honest with yourself, don’t let fear dictate your decisions, cherish those you love and let them know it.
