How To: Printed Shorts

Shorts season is officially here! With that said, designers always have fun printed shorts in their seasonal offerings, in addition to classic solids. This can be intimidating to some, as any multicolored bottoms take some strategic thinking when it comes to pairing the right top with them. A good rule of thumb when pairing your top, is this: a neutral color (can almost never go wrong), a color of the same family (think primaries, pastels, neutrals) or one that picks up a color of the print on the bottom.

Below are a few easy ways you can rock printed shorts:

Behind The Threads: Gorjana Jewelry

Gorjana jewelry is one of our absolute favorite jewelry lines at PlumpJackSport. Gorjana Reidel created the line in 2004 with the principle of creating, “current trends with timeless classics”. The collection focus is perfect for everyday and aesthetically appealing details create versatile style for any look.

I spoke with Gorjana about the line, jewelry essentials & her favorite pieces.

What has been your biggest inspiration in the development of Gorjana?
I am such a visual person that I get a lot of my ideas from everywhere, people  I see walking around, bloggers and magazines .  I will see what a girl is wearing and think a certain pair of earrings or a necklace would look really great with that outfit.  It comes from what I would love to have to accessorize my wardrobe.

Has a particular piece of jewelry become an icon for the line?
The Taner bar Necklace has definitely become the staple and by far the most popular.  It looks great on everyone and it goes with everything. It really is a must have piece.

How do you encompass the Gorjana customer in each piece you design?
We have a diverse group of customers so I try to design pieces that speak to different women.  Our pieces have a sense of timelessness and ease that gives our customers an opportunity to make them their own and wear them in a way that works best for them.

Who are your favorite fellow jewelry designers?
I have always really like Cathy Waterman’s pieces, they are so delicate, intricate and so beautiful.  I have also really liked some of the more edgy pieces that Eddie Borgo has, they are definitely more statement pieces but there is a clean feeling to them.

What are the three essential accessories every girl should own?

  • A great stud earring, stud earrings are so easy to wear and add a little sparkle to your face.
  • A simple and versatile necklace, something you can wear all the time and that can be layered with other pieces.
  • A great gold bracelet.  Lately I have been loving our cuffs, the alphabet cuff is one of my favorites because its so timeless and you can personalize it to have some extra meaning.

Gorjana & Griffin has expanded well beyond jewelry at this point. Where do you see the brand in five years?
We are constantly evolving so that is so hard to say.  I see us making great accessories that we really love with a focus on jewelry as it is the original passion behind the brand.

Behind The Threads: Tart Collections

Jamie and Dana Finegold of Tart Collections

Jamie and Dana Finegold of Tart Collections

“Quintessential California style.”

We’re excited to introduce our new series – Behind The Threads, where we’ll be talking with some of the faces behind the amazing brands we carry at PlumpJackSport.

We’ve carried bay area based line, Tart Collections, at PlumpJackSport for two years now and what attracted us to the line, was it’s effortless, fabulous fitting pieces and the super soft fabrics they have come to be known for. We sat down with husband and wife team, Jamie and Dana Finegold, owners of Tart Collections to talk about the creation of the line and why it works for every style.

Jamie Finegold’s hobby of design sprouted while he was attending school at UC Santa Barbara. He got his start by making t-shirts for athletic teams and sororities on campus and people took notice quickly and soon made a name for himself. Dana and Jamie (high school sweethearts) soon became partners, and in 1996, with Dana’s advertising and business background and Jamie’s designs, they launched JD Fine & Co.. Establishing their line of sleepwear for children and women, it was picked up my major retailers and had a great response from customers. From there, they created Tart Collections in 2004 to hone in on their growing female customer base, creating a women’s wear line that is versatile and chic.

Since then, Tart Collections has gained attention and is now available online and in high-end department store retailers and boutiques. Jamie said he knew Dana and him were “doing something right” when the line gained more and more momentum through an increasing celebrity following from the likes of Heidi Klum, Jessica Alba, Katy Perry and more. Jamie and Dana keep key cities in mind while designing, as each piece is weather tailored for ladies from all climates and with an emphasis on the pieces skimming the body just the right way. The super soft modal fabric that is consistent in each collection has become their signature feel.

The success of the company comes from the tight knit atmosphere of the staff at the Tart Collection offices. Jamie does the photography and oversees the design team and Dana oversees financials. They also have factories here in the bay area and have their sights set on manufacturing the entire line in the US, and to open Tart Collection retail stores so customers can get the full Tart experience.

Nautical Inspired Necessities

I’ve always loved classic nautical inspired pieces, as I feel like they’re timeless and chic enough to wear almost year round here in California. It’s always fun to see designers incorporating a nautical feel into their latest collections and I can’t help but feel inspired to wear some of my pieces in new ways. With our lack of winter here in

California, I can’t help but be in the summer mindset and sport my new Frye boat shoes on these many sunny days we’ve been having. Below are some of my current favorites that I’ve been sea-ing lately:

1. Splendid striped jacket

2. Frye Quincy boat shoes

3. Tory Burch textured
crossbody bag

4. Nordstrom cashmere & silk scarf

5. Saint James for J Crew unisex striped shirt

6. Free People rope belted cuffed shorts

7. Tory Burch chunky stripe straw tote

8. Gorjana anchor necklace

Footwear Favorites: Tory Burch Resort

A new year, means new shoes, right? Right.

Adding updated staples like a metallic driver, embellished sandal or chunky heel
bootie, can refresh your wardrobe in a way that creates new ways to pair your favorite pieces together. Opt for neutrals colors on classic styles (see our picks below), to get the most versatility and thus, combining fashion and function.

Cheers to two thousand foot-teen!

50 Shades of Gray-tness

Gray: The Classic Neutral.

We all have a good portion of our wardrobe dedicated to a plethora of blacks, whites and everything in between; also known as, gray. What’s not to love about our favorite colors; or shall I say, lack thereof color? They look great on everybody and can be worn year round. My theory is, if you love these colors and feel great in them, don’t fix your wardrobe if it’s not broken.

If you absolutely love your gray’s, white’s and black’s, opt for white in the warmer months and black in the cooler months. As for gray’s, go with lighter or heather gray in the warmer months and dark or charcoal gray’s in the cooler months.

However, if you ever feel you are stuck in a rut with your neutral staples (whether it be gray, black, white or taupe) and don’t feel like branching out to the other end of the color spectrum, here are some ways to play with your neutrals, so you still feel like you’re in your comfort zone.

  • Break up your solids. This is a great way to still wear your neutrals but in a different way – think color
    blocking, stripes or prints.

  • Contrast with an accessory. This is the easiest way to add a pop of contrasting color to your muted outfit. Scarves or statement necklaces are perfect addition to your favorite taupe sweater or go-to white blouse.

  • Layer your heart

Living in California, particularly in the Bay Area, I have become accustomed to layering from day to day. It has also become a fun way to mix and match textures, colors and accessories all at once. My favorite trend coming into focus in spring, is pairing a sweater over a blouse or button down blouse. This makes for a put together look, with the right amount of contrast.

Cold Weather Essentials

Temperatures are cooling down here in The Napa Valley. And with cooler temperatures, comes a transitioning wardrobe. Coats, gloves and scarves are a must and we’ve compiled our top cold weather favorites, so you can welcome
the cooler temperatures in style.

  • Short Drape Jacket – this jacket is the perfect ‘go-to’ coat. It’s made of wool and cashmere to keep you warm and cozy. Wear it two
ways and becomes an ideal work to weekend outerwear piece.

  • Cashmere Scarf – layering is key in the cooler months. Cashmere adds that little bit of comfort when coping with winter and who doesn’t love anything that feels like a hug? The key with scarves is to buy them wide enough so they can double as a wrap. This translates nicely into other seasons – bundle up and where as a scarf in fall and winter or drape over your shoulders when you’re wearing sleeveless or short sleeve tops in the warmer months. Voila!

Autumn Cashmere Featherweight Wrap

  • Versatile Gloves – a great accessory that is small enough to stash in your bag or car and big enough to make a difference when you want to protect your hands in the frigid weather. Opt for a less bulky fingerless style glove to still be able to use full functionality of your fingers or if you want full finger coverage, we suggest a tech specific fabric glove so you can still use your electronic gadgets while keeping your fingers covered.

  • Faux Fur Vest – vests are great if you want the warmth of a coat but not all the bulk. A faux fur vest is great because you can wear it over a long sleeve shirt for an easy look or over a dress and belted to dress it up a bit. Opt for a flat fur so it will be easier to layer. And the best thing of all, since it’s faux, it doesn’t shed – now
    that’s faux-bulous!
