Sundays, Bloody Sundays at PJSVI

PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn's barman, Jake Spero, is giving the saying, “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” a new connotation; wielding his mixological prowess like Merlin, Jake has concocted a Sunday menu of five Bloody Mary’s to fit any fancy, and elevate any soul.

It’s Sunday and you’re in Tahoe. Your legs don’t feel great. Perhaps your stomach and your head don’t feel great either. But gosh darn it, you came up here to ski, and you are getting on that chairlift! Rejuvenate with one of these bloody fine beverages.

Asian-Inspired Bloody
Served in a martini glass and looking dangerously delicious, it’s the Bloody Mary James Bond would drink. Led with Ketel One Citron and kiffir lime leaves, it’s smooth and sexy, and the wasabi powder packs a punch – not unlike some of them dames 007 used to wake up with on Sundays.

PlumpJack Bloody

There are Tahoe-Area-Bloody-Mary-lifer-connoisseurs who wouldn’t dare stray from the original PJ Bloody. It is spicy and tangy and thick and life-giving – a signature for some of Squaw’s finest last call, first chair skiers.

Peruvian Ceviche Bloody

Jake has ridden his bicycle all throughout South America and his beautiful wife hails from Peru. He knows a thing or two about the culture of our southern continental neighbor. This bloody looks like a smoothie, contains hamachi, and is served with a spoon. It would go well on a beach somewhere and is the perfect accompaniment to one of our legendary days of Tahoe Sun. It is for the adventurous taster, and a treasure for the palate.

Michelada de Sangre

Michelada is beer mixed with Clamata. Jake mixes it with a bit of tequila and Cholula among other things. I used to live in Germany. They mixed beer with everything – and just plain drank a lot of bier in general. This drink is a wonderful carbonated delight, and I think if a German head of state and a Central or South American head of state ever had to discuss the fate of their nations over breakfast, two Michelada de Sangres should be served to promote good feelings and avoid the spilling of any actual sangre.

Southern Bloody

This is what people from Kentucky skiing on the majestic peaks of North Carolina with flasks of bourbon in their jackets wake up with. And it won the overall unofficial taste test this day at PJs. You are first struck with the drink’s dark red color – Alabama Crimson if you will – given by the perfect infusion of Guinness, Stoli, Tabasco, Worcestershire, and molasses. Yes, molasses. A couple pinches of onion and garlic powder and you got something our beloved merry-making namesake Plump Jack (John) Falstaff himself would have adored – by candlelight in the morning musk of a dark and creaky 16th century tavern, professional women walking tiredly about in their civvies – fully aware “life is a charade.”

Your next Sunday in Tahoe, whether staying with us at the Inn or elsewhere, we invite you to get your ski legs back with a Sunday, Bloody Sunday courtesy of Mr. Jake Spero and the PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn.
